Fishing in the Indian Ocean
A Very Fast Week
As of yesterday I've been in Sri Lanka for a week and I have a strange feeling I've been here for so long, but yet it's gone by so fast. I think most people have that feeling at sometime or another. I seem to have gotten into a rhythm with the work and I feel I'm making a solid contribution . It's getting toward the end of the project, so there's some sense of urgency that's becoming apparent. The skilled workers here are so fun to work with and I feel so much warmth from them. Working hard and giving your best effort sure goes a long way toward gaining their respect. The other night Santha took Chris and I to his temple. There was such an amazing energy there. read more »
A Little Better Each Day
I was so sore yesteday it made it difficult to get into working. I've managed to fight through some back pain and sore muscles, however, and I'm feeling better all the time. My skin is getting darker and I'm probably losing about a pound every day. I felt like good progress was made today and I feel like I'm able to contribute much more just after three days of working. Today I plastered walls with Chris and a really great group of skilled workers including Shantha and Ranuka. We had a blast today teaching them to say "tight" when they approve of a job well done. They shared some Sinhalese profanity with us after making us promise to say we learned it from a tuk-tuk driver. Lots of laughs over that. read more »
First Day of Work
Safe and Sound in Dalawella
I think I could write a book just about the trip over here, but I'm going to keep it to a minimum for now because I'm so tired I can't think straight. The trip took a total of 30 hours. Those 30 hours have been packed with a lot of sensory input, to say the least. Right now I'm at an internet cafe in Galle and it's about 4:30 on a very humid Friday afternoon. I think it's probably more humid than usual because we just had a heavy rain for an hour or so and now the sun is back out. So...general thoughts? read more »
A few odds and ends
In no specific order:
1. My back feels awesome. I'd say it's back to 100% (get it?), but since I'm afraid of messing it up again I'll say I'm at 99%. I'm going back to Dr. Kopelove again for some more of that shit.
2. Regarding entry #1: that is the second time today I typed "get it?" in parentheses after making a stupid joke. Please disregard. I can't help myself sometimes. read more »
